INDIANAPOLIS - The Newberry College men's golf team is ranked fifth in the first NCAA Division II Southeast Region ranking of the season, which was released recently.
The Wolves, who are ranked 17th in the national coaches' poll as well as the GolfStat head-to-head rankings, find themselves in prime position for a fourth consecutive trip to the South/Southeast Super Regional tournament. The top 10 teams from the Southeast region will play in the tournament at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Fla., on May 2-4.
Newberry is the top South Atlantic Conference team in the rankings, with Lincoln Memorial sitting in 10th. The Food Lion SAC Championships will be held at the Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C., on April 10-12, with the tournament champion automatically advancing to the Super Regional tournament. LMU is the defending SAC champion after snapping Newberry's streak of two straight league titles in 2010.
Georgia College holds the top spot in the rankings, followed by Barton in second, Armstrong Atlantic in third and Columbus State in fourth. Following Newberry in fifth are UNC Pembroke in sixth, Queens (N.C.) in seventh, Flagler in eighth, USC Aiken in ninth and Lincoln Memorial in 10th.
The Wolves' B-squad is participating in the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate over the weekend, while the top five players will participate at the 2011 Food Lion SAC Championships on April 11-12.
