SALISBURY, N.C. - The No. 14 Newberry College men's golf program is tied for fifth place after the completion of Monday's first round at the Richard Rendleman Invitational hosted by Catawba College.

The Wolves shot a first round team combined stroke total of 296, 12-over par, at the par-71, 6,665-yard Country Club of Salisbury golf course and trail tournament leaders UNC Pembroke and Queens University of Charlotte by four strokes.

Individually, junior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is currently in fourth place after a first round final score of 70, 1-under par. Senior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) is tied for 12th with a 2-over par 73 and so is sophomore Brooks Massey (Lexington, S.C.).

Junior Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) and sophomore Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) are tied for 67th with opening rounds of 80, 9-over par.

Carson-Newman College golfer Gavin Hay is the individual tournament leader after shooting a 68, 3-under par, on Monday.

The Wolves begin round two on Tuesday morning in Salisbury, N.C.
