Wolves finish Matlock Collegiate Classic in fifth place

LAKELAND, Fla. - The No. 18 Newberry College men's golf program finished the 54-hole Matlock Collegiate Classic in fifth place after Tuesday's final round.

The Wolves shot a three round team stroke total of 869 (285-294-290; +5) at the 15-team tournament held at the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club. Newberry's 54-hole score is fourth best in school history.

The University of West Florida won the team championship with an 858 (293-286-279; -6). The Argonauts overcame a nine stroke deficit on Tuesday to beat out Georgia College and State University (285-285-292=862; -2).

Individually, senior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) tied for fifth place with a three round score of 212 (69-71-72; -4). Racking up 15 birdies, Stanley registered his third consecutive top-5 placement this season.

Junior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) tallied two eagles en route to a two day stroke total of 218 (73-73-72; +2) and a tie for 21st.

Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) also eagled a hole and finished in a tie with teammate Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) for 31st. Killen (70-75-76) and Lown (76-75-70) each shot a 221, 5-over par.

Sophomore Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) completed play in a tie for 61st with a three round score of 230 (73-77-80; +14).

The individual tournament champion was Billy Shida of Georgia College and State. Shida shot an 11-under par 205 (67-69-69).

The Wolves return to action on February 28-March 1 at The Charleston Shootout in Charleston, S.C.
