NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's golf program and head coach Brian McCants has announced the signing of Jon Weiss II. Set to join the Wolves for the 2011-12 academic year, Weiss (Sumter, S.C.) will graduate from Sumter High School in this coming spring.
“I know what kind of potential [Weiss] has,” said McCants, “In addition to being a highly skilled golfer, Jon is a wonderful young man and comes from an awesome family.”
Currently 34th in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA) individual rankings, Weiss recently teamed with Taylor Zoller (North Charleston, S.C.) in October to win the 2010 SCJGA Traditional 4-Ball Championship with rounds of 69 and 66. This past September, Weiss tallied a round of 72 at the Country Club of Newberry to earn medalist honors for the SCJGA Fall Swing Qualifier. Weiss' round of 72 featured a hole-in-one on hole three.
Qualifying for the 2010 South Carolina Amateur with a 71 at Lake Merion Golf Course in Santee, S.C., Weiss shot 75-77 and narrowly missed the cut at the Colombia Country Club. Additionally, Weiss picked up fifth, 12th, and 10th placements over the summer of 2010.
“I am so happy that Jon has decided to continue his education and golf career at Newberry,” said McCants, “I am confident that Jon will make a large contribution to our program from day one.”
