Wolves win Honda of Columbia Fall Classic for fifth consecutive year

PROSPERITY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's golf program finished in first place at The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic held at the Mid Carolina Club in Prosperity, S.C.

The Wolves shot a blistering 36-hole combined stroke total of 569 (284-285; -7) to pace a field of 10 at the par-72, 6,679-yard course. Newberry, the tournament hosts, claimed the championship for the fifth consecutive year.

Junior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) edged senior teammate Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) in a one hole playoff to earn the individual tournament victory. Campbell shot a 69, 3-under par, in the second round and finished the tournament at 140 strokes (69-71; -4).

Lown churned out an opening round 68, 4-under par, followed by an even par second round to also complete the tournament with a combined stroke total of 140 (68-72; -4).

Playing with Newberry's ‘Gray' or ‘B' squad, sophomore Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) earned all-tournament honors after winning a scorecard playoff with Nick York of Tusculum College. Gruenemeier tied for fifth place individually with a two round total of 142 (70-72; -2).

Junior Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) represented a third Newberry ‘Scarlet' or ‘A' squad member to finish in the top-10 individually. Killen completed play 1-under par with a two round score of 143 (72-71; -1).

Sophomore Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) tied for 30th with a 151 (78-73; +7) while senior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) had his second round score disqualified after shooting a 73 for the opening 18 holes.

Led by Gruenemeier, Newberry's B-squad finished in sixth place with a two round stroke total of 599 (305-294; +23). Sophomore Brooks Massey (Lexington, S.C.) tied for 15th after shooting a 147 (76-71; +3) while freshmen Ben Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) and Layton Truax (Savannah, Ga.) tied for 41st. Firebaugh shot an 82-74 split and Truax's rounds were 79-77 with each totaling 156 strokes, 12-over par.

Junior Jon Lussier (Burlington, Vt.) finished play in 52nd with a 160 (80-80; +16).

The Newberry ‘White' or ‘C' squad took eighth place with a two round team total of 603 (304-299; +27) and were led by John Allen Meetze. A senior, Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) fired a 145 (73-72; +1) and tied for 12th place.

Fellow senior Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) shot a 150 (75-75; +6) and tied for 25th while freshman Dixon Walker (Lexington, S.C.) racked up 154 strokes (79-75; +10) to tie for 36th.

Freshmen Sean Marquardt (Willowbrook, Ill.) placed 40th with a 155 (78-77; +11) and Cameron Lamb (Easley, S.C.) tied for 41st with a 156 (78-78; +12).

Newberry had three individual competitors in the tournament. Sophomore Shaw James (Charlotte, N.C.) placed 45th, freshman Fraser O'Connor (Buchory, Scotland) tied for 46th, and senior Jeff Reid (West Columbia, S.C.) tied for 48th.

The Newberry Wolves are next in action at The State-Farm Laker Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. on September 20-21.
