PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Newberry College men's golf program blasted a field of Division I opponents at the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday in Piscataway, N.J. en route to its first team tournament championship of the 2010-11 campaign.
The Wolves hammered out a tournament best final round stroke total of 280, 4-under par, and paced a field of 17 by 19 strokes. Newberry finished the 54-hole tournament with a three round team score of 847 (284-283-280; -5) at the par-71, 6,337-yard Rutgers University Golf Course.
Four Wolves placed in the top-10 individually with junior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) leading the pack. Wrapping up the tournament with a final round 68 to place second individually, Campbell's two day stroke total of 212 (73-71-68; -2) matches a career-low.
Junior Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) earned a third place finish with a score of 213 (65-74-74; -1) which included a new school record for an 18-hole low in the first round. Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) shot a 216 (70-75-71; +2) to tie for sixth while fellow senior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished the tournament in eighth place with a 217 (82-68-67; +3).
Sophomore Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) tied for 30th place with a 225 (76-70-79; +11).
The Wolves next tournament will be on Saturday, September 18 in Prosperity, S.C. for The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic.
