NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Newberry College men's golf program is in first place after the completion of 36-holes of The Rutgers University Invitational in New Brunswick, N.J. on Friday.
The Wolves hold a 10-stroke lead over Seton Hall University with a combined stroke total of 567, 1-under par. Newberry churned out an even par 284 for the first 18 holes at the par-71, 6,337-yard Rutgers University Golf Course.
Improving on round one, the Wolves shot one under par, 283, in the second round with help of a record breaking individual performance. Junior Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) set a new 18-hole school record with a first round score of 65, 6-under par. Killen posted a 74, 3-under par, in the second round and is tied for the individual lead with a 139, 3-under par.
Junior Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is tied for sixth after Friday's rounds with a two round score of 144 (73-71; +2). Senior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) finished the first day in a tie for eighth place (70-75=145; +3) representing the third Newberry individual in the top-10.
Sophomore Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) shot a 146 (76-70; +4) and is tied for 11th while senior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) sits in a tie for 28th with a 150 (82-68; +8).
The third and final round begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
