Four Newberry men's golfers participate in summer amateur tournaments

Over the summer, many members of the Newberry College men's golf team have been participating in amateur tournaments around the country. The Newberry Sports Information Department is pleased to bring you this update.

Newberry College rising senior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) qualified for the Carolinas Amateur Championship with a second place finish at the Festival of Flowers Invitational Golf Classic held at the Greenwood Country Club in Greenwood, S.C. on June 26-27. Stanley shot a 138 (68-70) and finished one stroke behind the tournament champion Steve Liebler. Considered one of the best amateur golfers in the history of the State of South Carolina, Liebler erased a one shot deficit during the final three holes to overtake Stanley. Qualifying for the Carolinas Amateur Championship for the second year in a row, Stanley will next hit the links on July 6-9 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Course No. 8, in Pinehurst, N.C.

Rising sophomore Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for 27th with a 72-hole score of 289 (72-72-73-72) at the Rice Planters Amatuer held at the Snee Farm Golf Club in Mount Pleasant, S.C. on June 22-26. On July 1, Gruenemeier qualified for the 2010 Florida Open after shooting a 71 at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The Florida Open will be held July 16-18 at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort; the site of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour's Transitions Championship.

Matthew Campbell, entering his third year in the Newberry men's golf program in 2010-11, placed third in the Collegiate Players Tour Penn Oaks Collegiate Open in West Chester, Penn. on June 28-30. Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) shot a 223 (76-74-73; +10) at the par-71, 6,700-yard course. The Collegiate Players Tour is a non-profit venture in its 17th year and is designed to provide summer golf competition college-age men and women.

Rising senior John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) has also been active over the summer. Meetze won the Mid-Carolina Club Championship shooting a 133 (65-68).
