HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - The No. 24 Newberry College men's golf team sits in 2nd place, seven strokes back of leader Lincoln Memorial University, through 27 holes at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships in Hendersonville, N.C. on Monday.
Slated for 36 holes in the first round, the first and second rounds were not fully completed because of a weather delay due to frost on the course. Halfway through a 54-hole tournament, Newberry shot a combined stroke total of 448 (299-149; +16) at the par-72, 6,796-yard Etowah Valley Country Club.
Lincoln Memorial shot a 441 (295-146; +9) to lead the tournament after day one. Brevard College is in third place, two strokes behind Newberry after a team stroke total of 450 (297-153; +18).
Indiviually, first team All-SAC selection Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) is tied for 2nd place with a 108 (73-35; E) through 27 holes. Stanley, a junior, is 1-under par at the midway point of the second round and has racked up seven birdies.
Sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is tied for 9th after a first day 111 (74-37; +3) and has three birdies in the tournament while sitting 1-over par going into the back nine of round two.
SAC Freshman of the Year Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) sits in a tie for 16th with a 115 (77-38; +7) while senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) is tied for 24th with a 116 (75-41; +8).
Junior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) is 10-over par with a first day stroke total of 118 (79-39) and is tied for 31st.
The individual tournament leader is Jack Garrett from Lenoir-Rhyne University. Garrett shot a 106 (70-36; -2) and holds a two stroke lead going into Tuesday's play.
Newberry bids for a third consecutive SAC Championship with the completion of round two followed by the third and final round on Tuesday.
