INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The No. 24 Newberry College men's golf team is ranked seventh in the Southeast Region in the latest NCAA Division II Regional Rankings which were released this weekend. Newberry is the only South Atlantic Conference team regionally ranked entering this week's Food Lion SAC Championships, which will be held at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Hendersonville, N.C, on Monday and Tuesday.
Newberry holds steady in the regional rankings after being ranked seventh in the Southeast Region as well in March. The three conference champions along with seven at-large bids from the regional poll will qualify for the NCAA Super Regionals held in Wilson, N.C. on May 2-5.
Newberry should be strongly favored at the SAC Championships and will be looking for its third consecutive SAC title. Of players who have played seven or more rounds this season, Newberry holds four of the top 10 individual scoring averages in the conference this season. Daniel Stanley currently leads the league with a 71.3 stroke average, while Chandler Gruenemeier averages 72.8 strokes to rank third in the league. Matthew Campbell averages 73.6 strokes per 18 holes and Ben Lown averages 74.2 strokes per round.
The scarlet and gray average 293 strokes per round as a team with two tournament wins and five top-five finishes this season. Live scoring for the SAC Tournament will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
