WHITE LAKE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team B-squad moved up two spots to finish in a tie for eighth place after the final round at the Carolina Sands Invitational on Saturday.
The scarlet and gray completed play with a two day stroke total of 601 (301-300; +25) at the par-72, 6,925-yard Carolina Sands Golf Course in White Lake, N.C. Newberry had 24 birdies and 101 pars for the tournament and moved up two spots, from eighth to 10th, in the final round.
Coker College took the team tournament victory with a 10-under par combined stroke total (281-285=566; -10). Host UNC Pembroke shot a 577 (287-290; +1) and took second place while St. Andrew's Presbyterian College nabbed a third place finish with a 588 (294-294; +12).
Individually, freshman Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to complete the tournament with an even par 144. Dennis picked up his first top-10 finish of his career.
Sophomore Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) tied for 24th place after shooting a two day score of 149 (75-74; +5).
Senior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) and sophomore Jon Lusser (Burlington, Vt.) each tied for 54th place with 36-hole stroke totals of 154, 10-over par. Burnside shot a 79-75 while Lussier scored 74-80 with an eagle.
Junior Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) shot a 21-over par 165 (83-82) and finished in 82nd.
The individual tournament champion was Christopher Marsh from Coker. Marsh shot a 140 (71-69; -4).
Newberry's next tournament comes on April 18-20 at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Hendersonville, N.C.
