WHITE LAKE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf B-squad is in 10th place after Friday's first round at the Carolina Sands Invitational hosted by UNC Pembroke in White Lake, N.C.
The scarlet and gray shot a team combined stroke total of 301, 13-over par, at the par-72, 6,295-yard Carolina Sands Golf Course and trail tournament leaders Coker College by 20 strokes (281; -7). Host UNC Pembroke is in second place (287; -1) while Tusculum College and St. Andrew's Presbyterian College are tied for third (294; +6). Mount Olive College is 16 strokes off the pace in fifth place (297; +9).
The Newberry B-squad had 11 birdies and 54 pars in the first round.
Individually, freshman Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) is tied for 11th place after a four birdie round sparked an even par 72 (36-36) on day one. Dennis is just three strokes back of tournament leader Jacob Murphy of Coker (36-33=69; -3).
Sophomores Jon Lussier (Burlington, Vt.) and Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) each finished Friday 3-over par and tied for 30th. Killen shot a 38-37 split while Lussier shot was even on the back nine at 39-36.
Senior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) completed round one with a 79 (40-39; +7) and in a tie for 70th. Junior Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) shot an 83 (41-42; +11) and sits in 81st.
The second round of the Carolina Sands Invitational begins Saturday morning in White Lake, N.C.
