GREENWOOD, S.C. - Newberry College junior Daniel Stanley overcame a five stroke deficit to take his first collegiate individual tournament championship in Tuesday's third and final round of the Bearcat Classic hosted by Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.

Stanley (Inman, S.C.) helped the scarlet and gray to a fourth place finish at the 16-team event held at the par-72, 6,798-yard Greenwood Country Club. Newberry shot a three round combined stroke total of 844 (279-284-281; -20) which is a new school record for a 54-hole low besting the old record by 28 strokes.

The 54-hole tournament featured a 36-hole day on Monday. Host Lander won the team tournament championship with a two day total of 833 (278-266-833; -31), including a staggering 22-under par second round on Monday.

Individually, Daniel Stanley set a new school record for a 54-hole low with a three round score of 207 (69-68-70; -9), besting teammate Ben Lown's (North Augusta, S.C.) old record of 208 set at the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships.

Stanley also holds Newberry's school records for an 18- and 36-hole low, but Tuesday marked the first time that Daniel has topped a leaderboard in his stellar career. With the tournament victory, Stanley becomes just the fifth Newberry golfer to garner a first place finish in school history.

Freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) was nipping at Stanley's heels throughout the Bearcat Classic and completed play just one stroke behind the tournament champion. Gruenemeier's 208 (71-68-69; -8), which would have tied the previous school record, is a new career-high.

Sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) finished 4-under par and in 15th place with a two day stroke total of 212 (67-74-71). Campbell's score of 212 is tied for third best in Newberry history and also ties his career-high.

Junior Ben Lown tied for 34th with a 4-over par tournament and a stroke total of 220 (75-74-71) while senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) shot a 225 and tied for 51st (72-77-76; +9).

The Bearcat Classic is the final tune-up before the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament April 18-20 in Etowah, N.C. The Newberry B-Squad will be in action April 2-3 at the UNC Pembroke/Carolina Sands Intercollegiate in White Lake, N.C.
