NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College head men's golf coach Brian McCants is pleased to announce the addition of Ben Firebaugh in the fall signing period.
Firebaugh is a senior at William Byrd High School in Roanoke, Va., where he is a five-time all-district selection, two-time all-region player and the 2009 regional player of the year. He competed in the prestigious Scott Robertson Memorial in May 2009 and shot 76-73-73 and was a qualifier for the 2009 VSGA Junior Match Play, advancing to the quarterfinals.
He shot a 3-under, 71-69, to win Roanoke's Junior Hall of Fame tournament, coming from 7 strokes behind in the final round. Ben's personal low round of 66 came in the Roanoke Valley Men's Hall of Fame qualifier. He is a Virginia Commonwealth Scholar and has been named to William Byrd's Academic Honor Roll all four years.
"I couldn't be happier that Ben has decided to continue his education and golf career here at Newberry," McCants said. "He comes from an awesome family who supports him in all of his pursuits. Ben's dedication and willingness to do what it takes to become the best player he can be really attracted me to him. He has played in some very big tournaments and as his accomplishments show, he has played his best in crunch time. Ben will no doubt become a leader of our program on the golf course and off in the four years he's here."
