CLEMMONS, N.C. - The No. 14-ranked Newberry College men's golf team is tied for fifth place after Sunday's first round at the Will Wilson Division II Southeast Preview held in Clemmons, N.C.
The scarlet and gray trail tournament leader Belmont Abbey College by five strokes after shooting an opening round 299, 19-over par. 10 strokes separate the top nine teams in the tournament with three rounds still to be played at the par-70 Tanglewood Park Golf Club-Championship course over the next two days.
With wind gusts as strong as 30 miles per hour, Newberry's Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) was one of only two players in a field of 94 to finish with an under par round.
Gruenemeier, a freshman, is the overall tournament leader after putting together a 2-under par opening round of 68. David Clarkson of St. Andrew's Presbyterian College is one stroke behind Chandler after a first day 69 (-1).
Senior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) is in a tie for 14th after completing play Sunday with a 18-hole score of 74 (+4). Junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) is tied for 35th with a 76 (+6).
Juniors Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) are tied for 68th after each shot an 81, 11-over par, in the first round.
The second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning.
