Each week, NewberryAthleticSite.com will feature a Q&A interview with a member of the 2009-10 men's golf program. This week's installment highlights freshman Shaw James.

Full Name: Shaw James
Birthdate: June 10, 1990
Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.

Growing up, how did you get involved with the game of golf? Who or what drew you to the game?
I played all kinds sports growing up including everything from football to golf. My Dad got me involved in golf. He's been a big golfer his whole life so he thought he would try the sport on me. We used to live behind a golf course which was convenient for practice. On summer evenings, he would take me out on the course and we would walk a couple of holes together. Eventually, we would work up to where I could play nine holes. We both never took it too serious and it was all for great fun.

What is your favorite aspect of playing golf? Why?
My favorite aspect is playing in tournaments and doing well because it gives me confidence in my game and allows me to grow as a golfer.

When did you first hear about Newberry College? What initially drew your interest about the school?
I've heard about Newberry my whole life because my Dad graduated from here. He was also on the golf team. The initial draw to Newberry was the people and the community. I felt this was a place that could help me grow and mature properly for the future.

What are some of your favorite non-golf related aspects of Newberry College? Of college life?
My favorite non-golf related aspect of Newberry is the size of the campus. It's a perfect size in my eyes. The sizes fit me well because I can participate and get more out of the class, unlike a 150 student class.

How much time per week do you spend devoted to your golf game? What are some of the things you do to practice and get better?
I would say that I spend almost every day of the week working on golf. I usually take one day off to give my body a rest or to keep up with my school work.

What is your favorite non-golf related activity? Why?
My favorite non-golf related activity is playing video games with friends. Besides playing golf, it's the most entertaining activity. You can never be too old for video games!

If you could play any other sport other than golf at the collegiate level, what would it be? What position would you play?
I would definitly play basketball. I say this because I've always played basketball. I played in leagues all throughout elementary, middle, and even high school. I still play pickup games every once in a while with friends back home. I'm a shooting guard.

What are some of the differences between college golf and the golf you've played at other levels?
The major difference is that you have more people supporting you. There is a whole college community cheering you on and wishing you the best. In high school, I only played outside tournaments. I didn't play for my school. This was a big difference for me compared to other players on the team.

What are some of your personal and team goals while representing Newberry's golf program?
My team goal is to help Newberry win a National Championship. My personal goals are to improve daily and become the best player on the team.

Thanks to Shaw for taking the time out of his busy schedule as a student-athlete to talk to NewberryAthleticSite.com. Next week's focus will be on Jon Lussier.
