Newberry finishes 14th at Cougar Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Newberry College men's golf team finished in 14th place after wrapping up the last three holes of the first round the entirety of the second round at the Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Ga. on Tuesday afternoon.

After the Newberry's first round was halted with three holes to go on Monday due to darkness, the scarlet and gray was forced to play 21 holes of golf on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. Newberry finished the tournament at 16-over par with a combined stroke total of 584 (291-293).

Barry University was the overall tournament champion with a comfortable 10-stroke cushion over second place University of North Alabama. Barry shot a 561 (283-278; -7) and was the only team to come in under par.

Individually, Newberry's Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) finished in a tie for 25th with a two round total of 144 (73-71; +2). Juniors Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) along with freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) all tied for 52nd place with a stroke total of 147.

Lown, Stanley, and Gruenenmeier shot identical round totals of 73-74 to achieve a 5-over par tournament.

Senior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) was 11-over par and tied for 88th (72-81=153).

The tournament's individual champion was Craig Gibson of Georgia Southwestern State University. Gibson shot a 5-under par 137 to take home the trophy (72-65).

Newberry's next match of the fall season will be at The D-II Southeast Region Preview in Greensboro, N.C. at the Tanglewood Golf Course on October 17-20.
