GREENEVILLE,Tenn. - The Newberry College men's golf B-squad is in a tie for fourth place, three strokes behind tournament leader and host Tusculum College, after the conclusion of the first round of the Tusculum Fall Classic in Greeneville, Tenn.
The scarlet and gray compiled a stroke total of 296 (+12) on day one at the par-72, 6,763-yard Link Hills Golf Course and are tied with Wingate University. Just one stroke separates first through third place with Tusculum leading with a 293 (+9), Lincoln Memorial University in second with a 294 (+10), and Catawba College with a 295 (+11).
Individually, sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) churned out a 3-under par stroke total of 69 (35-34) in the first round. Campbell, the 2009 SAC Freshman of the Year, leads Lenoir-Rhyne University's Brandon Squier by one stroke with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.
Newberry junior John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) is in a tie for 18th place with a 2-over par round of 74 (39-35). Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.), also in his junior year, shot twin 38s on the front and back nine to finish with a first round 76 (38-38; +4)and in a tie for 34th.
Freshmen Kevin Britton (Palm City, Fla.) and Trey Dennis III (Moncks Corner, S.C.) are currently in ties for 42nd and 61st respectively. Britton shot a 77 (40-37; +5) and Dennis finished the first round with an 83 (42-41; +11).
The second round of Tusculum Fall Classic will get underway Tuesday morning at the Link Hills Golf Course.
