ATLANTA, Ga. - The dynamic duo of juniors Daniel Stanley and Ben Lown combined for 20 birdies over 36 holes to propel the No. 24-ranked Newberry College men's golf team to victory at the State Farm-Laker Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. on Tuesday.

The scarlet and gray continued an impressive streak of four consecutive under par team round scores, with a second round 278 (-10) at the par-72, 7,202-yard Crystal Lake Golf Course. Newberry's two day stroke total was 562 (284-278; -14) to upend first round leader, No. 1-ranked, Georgia College and State University by four strokes.

Tuesday's second round 278 is tied for the second best 18-hole team stroke total in school history and the third time that Newberry has broken the record low previous to the 2009-10 season.

In just four rounds of golf in the 2009-10 campaign, the Newberry College golf team has set new individual 18-hole and 36-hole lows and then later tied and broken those records respectively.

Stanley (Inman, S.C.) followed Monday's record-tying 66 (-6) with a second round 69 (-3) to break a two-day old school record for a 36-hole low. The ink on Sean Collard's (Gauteng, South Africa) old record of 137, set Saturday at the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic, had yet to dry before Stanley bested his score by two strokes on Tuesday.

Remarkably, Stanley's 135 (66-69; -9) was not good enough for the individual tournament championship. Chris Carlin, of third place Barry University, shot a 133 (67-66; -11) to edge Stanley by two strokes.

Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) also had a tremendous day for the scarlet and gray. Working off of 11 birdies in 36 holes, Lown posted a two day stroke total of 137 (69-68; -7) which before Tuesday would have been a record-tying score. Ben finished the tournament in a tie for third place.

While Lown, Stanley, and Collard have ruled the Newberry men's golf headlines in the past few days, freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) has quietly put together an impressive first two tournaments. Gruenemeier tied for 13th place at the State Farm-Laker Invitational after a 2-under par 142 (73-69) and Chandler has come in under par in three of four collegiate rounds to start the season.

Seniors Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) and Collard were integral to Newberry's win in Atlanta. Burnside shot a 150 (78-72; +6) and tied for 60th while Collard hammered out a 155 (76-79; +11) and finished in 74th place.

Newberry will send the B-squad to Greeneville, Tenn. for the Tusculum Fall Invitational on September 28-29 and the top squad will be back in action October 5-6 at the Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Ga.
