PROSPERITY, S.C. - In a record setting day for the men's golf program, the Newberry College “Scarlet” squad rallied in the second round of The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic to overtake UNC Pembroke and claim the tournament championship for the fourth straight year.
The 2009 edition of the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic featured 16 teams and 84 entrants for a one day, two-round event at the par-72, 6,633-yard Mid Carolina Club course in Prosperity, S.C.
Newberry's first round stroke total of 278, 10-under par, set a new school record for an 18-low and put the scarlet and gray in second place behind UNC Pembroke. The Braves shot a staggering 276, 12-under par, in the early round.
Individually, senior Sean Collard (Guateng, South Africa) had a career day with a spectacular 66, 8-under par, in the opening round that featured back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th holes and then again 11th and 12th holes.
Collard's 66 is a new individual school record for an 18-hole low narrowly beating out current sophomore Matthew Campbell's 67 at the Kiawah Island Invitational on September 9, 2008. Collard's day of breaking school records would not end after the first round.
Down two strokes to UNC Pembroke, Newberry's “Scarlet” squad took the second round by storm shattering the newly set school record for a team 18-hole low. Just hours before, Newberry had bested the old record by six strokes; a 284 put up by the 2008-09 men's team at the Matlock Collegiate Classic.
For the last 18, the scarlet and gray shot a phenomenal and record setting 273, 15-under par, in the second round. Newberry's two round total of 551, 25-under par, for 36-holes is a new school record besting last year's score at the Honda of Columbia Classic by an incredible 23 strokes.
When the dust settled from Newberry's fantastic day, the “Scarlet” team bested UNC Pembroke by five strokes. The Braves finished with a team stroke total of 556 (276-280; -20).
Individually, Collard's second round of 71, 1-under par, set yet another Newberry record for an individual 18-hole low. The senior edged out former Newberry golfer Ryan Madigan and current junior Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) by one stroke. Collard finished with a 7-under par round of 137 (66-71).
Despite Collard's career day, UNC Pembroke's Jordan Walor emerged as the individual tournament champion with twin 68's resulting in a 136, 8-under par, day.
The Newberry “Scarlet” team's impressive score didn't just center around Collard's tremendous day, but featured solid play from the entire unit. Freshman Chandler Gruenemeier (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a sizzling debut with a two round score of 138 (70-68; -6). Gruenemeier finished in a tie for third and was a named to the all-tournament team.
Junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) placed sixth with a 139 (72-67; -5) and Lown tied for seventh with a 140 (73-67; -4). Sophomore Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) shot 2-under par and finished in a tie for 12th with a 142 (70-72; -2).
As hosts of the tournament, Newberry entered three separate teams with the “Gray” and “White” teams also competing. Newberry's “Gray” squad finished in fifth place shooting a 573 (293-280; -3) led by senior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) with a tie for 12th. Burnside shot 2-under par for the tournament including a 4-under second round (74-68=142).
Freshman Kevin Britton (Miami, Fla.) notched a 1-under par day with a 143 (71-72) tying for 16th and junior Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) shot even par for the “Gray” squad ending the tournament in a tie for 22nd (74-70=144).
Rounding out the “Gray” squad was freshman Trey Dennis (Moncks Corner, S.C.) in a tie for 22nd (74-70=144; E) and Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) in a tie for 45th (74-74=148; +4).
The “White” team finished play in a tie for ninth place with John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) leading the way with a 2-over par 146 (74-72). Jon Lussier (Burlington, Vt.) tied for 45th at 4-over par (72-76; 148) while Brooks Massey (Lexington, S.C.) tied for 55th (77-72=149; +5).
