Each week, NewberryAthleticSite.com will feature a Q&A interview with a member of the 2009-10 men's golf program. This week's installment highlights freshman Kevin Britton.

Full Name: Kevin Thomas Britton
Birthdate: February 26, 1991
Hometown: Miami, Fla.

Growing up, how did you get involved with the game of golf? Who or what drew you to the game?
I got involved in golf because of my buddies Skyler Blair and Scott Cunningham. They played on a regular basis after school, but I was never interested because I thought the sport was boring. One day, I decided to go play with them, so I convinced my grandparents to cut down some clubs and headed to the course. On the range, Scott asked if he could hit with my seven iron and when he hit his shot, my club went flying off into space. After that incident, I asked for a set of clubs for my birthday and ever since I've been addicted.

What is your favorite aspect of playing golf? Why?
My favorite aspect are competitions. I'm very competitive and I enjoy competing in tournaments. My brothers and I were always competing against one another growing up. I also like the individuality of the sport and the honesty the game requires.

When did you first hear about Newberry College? What initially drew your interest about the school?
I first heard of Newberry College while competing at an American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.

What are some of your favorite non-golf related aspects of Newberry College? Of college life?
I really like the small class sizes and being on my own.

How much time per week do you spend devoted to your golf game? What are some of the things you do to practice and get better?
I don't really know how much time I spend on the course per week simply because I don't keep track. I do get out to the course as much as possible. I practice my short game mostly. Back at home, I work with my short game coach Jerry Tucker. He's really helped get my short game to the level it is now and he's played a big part in my life. I'm not a long hitter, but I feel my short game keeps me up with the big hitters.

What is your favorite non-golf related activity? Why?
I really love fishing and being out on the boat. I've been around water my whole life and lived in the Florida Keys until I was about five or six years old.

If you could play any other sport other than golf at the collegiate level, what would it be? What position would you play?
I would wrestle because my brother and many of my neighbors wrestled in high school as well as at the college level at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

What are some of the differences between college golf and the golf you've played at other levels?
So far, I've learned that college golf is much more competitive than golf at other levels.

What are some of your personal and team goals while representing Newberry's golf program?
My personal goal is to play to the best of my ability and continually improve my game. Obviously, our team goal is to go as far as possible in the postseason and to win a national championship.

Thanks to Kevin for taking the time out of his busy schedule as a student-athlete to talk to NewberryAthleticSite.com. Next week's focus will be on Trey Dennis III.
