EDGEFIELD, S.C., and BLUFFTON, S.C. - Newberry College golfer Ben Lown picked up his second victory of the summer in the Regions Cup amateur golf series at the Perry Watson Memorial held this past weekend in Edgefield, S.C.
Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) staved off local favorite Garland Smith (Edgefield, S.C.) in a three hole playoff at the Pine Ridge Country Club by sinking a lengthy putt for birdie on the par-5 third hole. Lown birdied the third hole twice in regulation as well.
Both Lown and Smith shot 69-70, a 139 stroke total, in the two round tournament and were deadlocked at 5-under par. Lown's victory was his second of the Regions Cup series in as many tries with the rising junior winning the North Augusta Exchange Club/Persimmon Hill Classic on June 20-21. The Regions Cup is a tour-type circuit primarily in the Augusta area. Collegiate players are not eligible for the Cup championship. For information on the Regions Cup, click here.
“I am so happy for Ben,” said head coach Brian McCants, “For him to win a second event this summer in the Regions Cup series is outstanding. He is learning how to win and understanding what it takes to win.”
Lown is not the only Newberry golfer active this summer as incoming freshman Brooks Massey (Lexington, S.C.) is gearing up for the South Carolina Amateur Championship held at Berkeley Hall Plantation's South Course in Bluffton, S.C.
A field of 124 amateurs will begin play in the 72-hole event on Thursday at the par-72, 7,075-yard Tom Fazio-designed course. The top 70 and ties qualify for the final two rounds.
“I am looking forward to watching Brooks compete on Thursday,” said McCants, "This is a great opportunity for him." For more information on the South Carolina Amateur, click here.
