CHARLESTON, S.C. - Newberry College rising junior Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) sits in a tie for 34th place after the first day of stroke play at the 95th annual Carolinas Amateur Championship. The championship is being held at the 6,797 yard, par 71 Country Club of Charleston. Stanley carded a 37 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine to record an even par 71.
The top 31 scores after tomorrow's stroke play will join defending champion Ben Kohles of Cary, N.C., in match play beginning Friday. A total of 16 players share the tie at even par with Stanley, while only three players carded rounds lower than 4-under par. Reigning North Carolina Mid-Amateur champion Uly Grisette of Clemmons, N.C., fired an 8-under par 63 to lead by two strokes over Country Club of Charleston member Bert Atkinson and Michael Cromie of Cary, N.C., after the first round.
Stanley will likely know if he has a shot at advancing to match play before lunchtime tomorrow, as he in the second group to tee off. He will begin his crucial second round on hole No. 1 at 8:09 a.m.
