Newberry men's golf finishes in 18th place at South/Southeast Super Regional

FLORENCE, Ala. - The Newberry College men's golf team completed the third and final round of the 2009 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional in 18th place after shooting a combined score of 912 (293-310-309; +48) at the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals course on Wednesday.

The scarlet and gray entered the final 18 holes needing to make up 18 strokes for a bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship held in Blaine, Wash. On May 19-22. South/Southeast Regional champion University of North Alabama (281-295-292=868; +4), Lynn University (285-287-297=869; +5), Barry University (288-288-298=874; +10), Columbus State University (290-296-289=875; +11), and Georgia College and State University (290-300-286=876; +12) qualified for the National Championship.

Individually, sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) was Newberry's top individual. Lown shot a 226 (72-75-79; +10) and tied for 53rd. Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) tied for 65th after shooting a 228 (73-77-78; +12) through 56 holes.

Freshman Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) was 17-over par with a three day score of 233 (71-82-80) and tied for 89th while sophomore Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) tied for 92nd with an 18-over par performance (77-85-72=234).

Junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) was 27-over par with a 56-hole stroke total of 243 (83-76-84).

The tournament's individual champion was Jake Greer from host North Alabama. Greer finished at six under par with a total stroke count of 210 (68-71-71; -6).
