ETOWAH, N.C. - After a three stroke deficit and a placement of third after Monday's first two rounds of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship, the Newberry College men's golf team rallied with a third round score of 294 to win a second consecutive SAC Championship by 11 strokes.

SAC Head Coach of the Year Brian McCants' squad watched as day one leaders Carson-Newman College and second place Brevard College struggled to keep pace with the scarlet and gray's six over par team performance.

Led by sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.), Newberry will receive an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Super Regional to be held in Florence, Ala. on May 3-6.

Burnside, an upperclassman, was a model of consistency throughout the SAC Championships with a three round stroke total of 221 (73-76-72; +5).

Lown, a clutch performer in his second SAC Championship tournament, equaled the three round total of 221 (72-71-78; +5) from his teammate. Lown's best rounds came on Monday when he shot one under par over 36 holes.

In a roaring comeback, sophomore Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) jumped from 28th to 9th with a spectacular four under par round on Tuesday. Stanley's 68 was an 18-hole low for the tournament and Daniel finished with a three round total of 222 (78-76-68; +6).

Freshman Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) was steady in his first SAC Championship appearance with a three round stroke total of 224 (73-75-76; +8). Campbell tied for 11th place.

Sophomore Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) finished the tournament with a 238 (73-84-81; +22) overall score and in a tie for 35th.

The individual SAC tournament champion was hardly a surprise as SAC Men's Golfer of the Year Chase Carroll continued his fantastic 2008-09 campaign. Carroll shot a 217 (69-71-77; +1).

Newberry College men's golf will be heading to the NCAA Super Regional on May 3-6 in Florence, Ala. Stay tuned to www.NewberryAthleticSite.com for information regarding the NCAA tournament.
