GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team is in second place at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C.

The scarlet and gray put themselves in great position Friday by shooting a stroke total of 300 (+12) at the par-72, 7,102 yard course. NC trails first place Eastern Carolina, the host team, by nine strokes after day one. The Pirates shot a total of 284, 3 over par.

Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) tied for Newberry's best score of the day by shooting 1-over par. Lown (39-34) and Campbell (37-36) now sit in eighth place overall in the tournament.

Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) finished the day in a tie for 18th place with a stroke total of 75. Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) sits 7-over par with a stroke total of 79, tying 52nd overall. Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) tied for 62nd place with a stroke total of 80.

Rhode Island's Taylor Fontaine is the individual tournament leader sitting at 6-under par with a first round 66.
