POOLER, Ga. - Former Newberry College men's golfer Hunter Mengel (Stone Mountain, Ga.) is set to make his professional debut on the eGolf Tarheel Tour after qualifying for the Savannah Quarters Championship on Monday.
Mengel shot a 69, three under par, in the 18-hole qualifier held at the par-72, 7,335-yard Tradition National Golf Course in Hardeeville, S.C. A member of the class of 2007, Mengel had five birdies and tied for third place. The top-10 individual scores qualified for the Savannah Quarters Championship.
The eGolf Tarheel Tour is a professional mini-tour with events throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The purse for the Savannah Quarters Championship is $300,000 and the tournament takes place in Pooler, Ga. from April 1-4 at the Savannah Quarters Country Club.
Mengel spent four years representing the scarlet and gray on the links from 2003 to 2007. In his time at Newberry, Mengel set and broke many school records including the individual 18-hole low, 36-hole low, stroke average for a year, and stroke average for a career. Head coach Brian McCants bestows the Hunter Mengel Award to a current team member with the best stroke average at the end of each season.
Mengel was a two-time selection to the All-SAC team while attending Newberry.
