HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team finished in a tie for second place at the one day, four team Blue Ridge Mountain Challenge at the Etowah Valley Country Club in Hendersonville, N.C. on Saturday.
The scarlet and gray finished one stroke behind the challenge champion Tusculum College Pioneers at the par-72, 6,796-yard golf course. Tusculum shot a 306, 18-over par, as a team in the 18-hole tournament.
Newberry and host Brevard College finished in a tie for second place with each institution garnering a team score total of 307, 19-over par. The fourth place team was Catawba College. The Indians shot a 315, 27-over par.
Individually, sophomore Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) and junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) each tied for seventh place with first rounds of 76, four over par. Holmes shot a 37 on the back nine and a 39 on the front, while Burnside put up a 39 on the back and 37 on the front.
Sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) tied for 12th place shooting a 77 (37-40; +5) on Saturday. Freshman Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) finished the day with a stroke total of 78 (38-40; +6) and tied for 16th while sophomore Daniel Stanley shot a 79 (39-40; +7) and tied for 19th.
The individual challenge championship was shared by Brevard's Grant Carnie and Tom Rennie along with Catawba's John O'Planick as each player shot a 73, one over par.
The scarlet and gray hit the links the first weekend of April at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
