NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Newberry College men's golf team is ranked 23rd in the second Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Poll of the spring, it was announced today. The scarlet and gray are ranked in the top 25 for the first time this season.

The ranking comes on the heels of a fourth place finish at the Southbridge Pirate Invitational hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University last week. Newberry garnered 77 points and is 20 points behind Washburn University in 22nd place. Newberry is one of two newcomers to this week's poll along with Cal State-Stanislaus in 24th.

The top 10 is dominated by Newberry's Southeast Regional opponents, led by the Pacers of USC Aiken in first with 386 points and eight first place votes. Columbus State University is in second, with Florida Southern College in third, Lander University in fourth and the University of Central Oklahoma in fifth. Nova Southeastern University is in sixth and Sonoma State is in the seventh spot. The top 10 is rounded out by Georgia College and State University, the University of North Alabama and Clayton State University. Five of the top 10 teams are in the Peach Belt Conference.

Newberry College is the only South Atlantic Conference team represented in the poll.

The scarlet and gray are off for Spring Break and return to action on March 21. Newberry will travel to Hendersonville, N.C.'s Etowah Valley CountryClub for a tri-match against South Atlantic Conference foes Tusculum College and Brevard College. The day's golf will provide a sneak preview of the course for the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships.
