Newberry men's golf in a tie for second after 36-holes

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Newberry College men's golf team is tied for second place with Lander University after day one of the Southridge Pirate Invitational hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University and held in Savannah, Ga.

The scarlet and gray shot a combined team score of 597, 21-over par, through the first two rounds at the par-72, 6,922-yard Southridge Golf Club. The No. 8 Lander Bearcats also tallied a 597 in the opening day of competition.

The tournament leader after two rounds is No. 24 Valdosta State University. The Blazers have a 10-stroke lead with a combined stroke total of 597, 11-over par.

Individually for Newberry, sophomore Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) is tied for third place after shooting an even par 144 on Monday. Stanley churned out a one under par, 71, in the first 18 holes. On the back 18, Daniel completed the round in 73 strokes.

After a solid first round 72, sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished the second round with an eight over par, 80. Lown stands tied with three of his teammates at 18th with a 152.

Also shooting eight over par, 152, in the first 36 holes were freshman Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.). Campbell turned in a 73-79 first day and Holmes garnered a 79-73.

Junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) shot a 157 (80-77, +13) on Monday and is tied for 38th.

The individual leader after Monday's two rounds is All-American is Brent Witcher of Valdosta State. Witcher shot a 139 (69-70, -5) on day one.

The scarlet and gray hit the links tomorrow morning to complete the third and final round of the Southridge Pirate Inivtational Tuesday morning.
