LAKELAND, Fla. - The Newberry College men's golf team is in second place after the completion of the first two rounds of the Matlock Intercollegiate in Lakeland, Fla. on Monday.

A three round tournament, the scarlet and gray had a fantastic first round that saw four Newberry golfers at or under even par. With a team stroke total of 284 and standing at four under par, Newberry had the lead after the first 18 holes.

The scarlet and gray's first round 284 is a new school record for a team 18-hole low.

In a tournament that has 12 of 15 of the top-40 ranked teams by www.golfstat.com, Newberry's play can only be categorized as impressive.

"The strength of this field is incredible," said head coach Brian McCants, "To be invited to a tournament like this is a great measure of where we are as a program."

Newberry's second round wasn't quite as successful as the first as the scarlet and gray shot 292. Still holding the second place position, Newberry is 12 strokes back of Clayton State University. The Lakers are the tournament leaders and have a two round stroke total of 564 after a stunning 277, 11-under par, in the second round.

"It's a lot of fun being this type of atmosphere," said McCants, "But this is how we are capable of playing."

Individually, sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) is tied for sixth place after the first 36 holes. Lown is currently two under par shooting a 142 (70-72) on Monday.

Freshman Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) is just one stroke behind Lown with a 143 (72-71) stroke total. Following an even par first round, Campbell churned out a one under par performance and is in a tie for 10th.

Junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) had a solid first day of one over par through 36 holes. With a one over par score of 145 (72-73), Burnside stands in a tie for 16th.

Freshman Drew Falvey (Murrell's Inlet, S.C.) got into the mix as well with a 156 (80-76) on Monday. Currently in a tie for 65th place, Falvey finished the day 12-over par, but improved four strokes from the first to the second round.

After shooting a 70 in the first round, sophomore Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

The scarlet and gray take to the links on Tuesday to complete the third and final round.
