NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team has released the schedule for the spring of 2009 as announced by head coach Brian McCants.
The scarlet and gray participated in five competitions during the fall season. Newberry garnered three top-5 finishes, five top-10 finishes, and reeled in a 1st place victory on familiar ground by winning the the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic held at the Mid-Carolina Club in Prosperity, S.C.
Individually during the fall season, star sophomore Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) churned out a stroke average of 72.6 to lead the team. With a low round of 71 for the fall, Stanley warmed up for the spring season in fine fashion with four of his eight rounds finished under par.
Fellow sophomore's Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) also had strong starts to the 2008-09 season. Lown produced three of eight rounds played under par and Holmes finished in 2nd place at the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic, winning a spot on the all-tournament team.
Freshmen Ryan Madigan (Waterford, Ireland) and Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) look to improve on successful fall seasons. Madigan stands second on the team in stroke average with a 74.1 (minimum five rounds) and Campbell shot Newberry's low round of the fall; a 67 in the second round of the Kiawah Island Invitational in September.
Campbell's 67 stroke second round is formed a new school record for a low score over 18 holes.
