NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team wrapped up the 2008 fall season with the 1st annual intrasquad match play competition.
The two-round, Davis Cup-style tournament pitted the Scarlet, captained by women's head golf coach Lauren Ressler, and the Gray, led by men's head golf coach Brian McCants.
After Monday's four-ball round held at the Country Club of Newberry, the Scarlet and Gray teams were all knotted up at 2-2. The Gray team sported victories when the freshman duo of Chase Durham (Chapin, S.C.) and Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) defeated junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) and freshman Cory Garrick (North Augusta, S.C.) 2-and-1.
Gray captain Brian McCants and freshman Ryan Madigan (Waterford, Ireland) were able to stave off the Scarlet team of Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) and Mac Stephens (Cross, S.C.) by finishing play 1-up.
The Scarlet team's wins came from the tandems of sophomore John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) and freshman Drew Falvey (Murrels Inlet, S.C.) along with the duo of freshman Matthew Killen (Yorkshire, England) and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.).
Meetze and Falvey knocked off senior Billy Burrows (Bluffton, S.C.) and junior Sean Collard (Gauteng, South Africa) 2-and-1 while Killen and Holmes beat the team of sophomore Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and freshman Jacob DuBose (West Columbia, S.C.) 5-and-3.
Tuesday's second round at the Mid-Carolina Club featured singles matches to determine the victor. Scarlet would dominate the day taking 5-of-8 singles matches en route to claiming the title to the first ever intrasquad match play competition.
For the Scarlet squad, Meetze defeated Durham 1-up after being down four holes at the turn. Burnside beat Dubose 2-and-1, Stanley knocked off Collard 6-and-5, Falvey defeated Burrows 2-and-1, and Holmes held off Campbell finishing 1-up.
Gray's victories featured Lown downing Killen 4-and-3, Madigan over Garrick 2-and-1, and McCants beating Stephens 7-and-6.
The Newberry men's golf team will resume competition in the Spring semester.
