PROSPERITY, S.C. - For the third straight year, the Newberry College men's golf team hosted and won the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic at the Mid-Carolina Club in Prosperity, S.C. on Saturday.

On a record-setting day for head coach Brian McCants' squad, 10 teams competed in the one-day, 36-hole tournament on the par-72, 6,825-yard course.

With two teams entered into the tournament, Newberry “Scarlet”, or A-team, tied a school record after the morning round of play.

Comprised of sophomores Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.), Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.), and Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) along with freshmen Matthew Campbell (Rome, N.Y.) and Ryan Madigan (Waterford, Ireland), the Scarlet squad completed the first round with a 286 stroke total.

The Scarlet team's two-under par first round tied a school record for an 18-hole low and also provided a four stroke cushion over Tusculum College going into the second round.

Newberry Scarlet followed up the first round 286 with an even-par 288. The combined 36-hole total of 574 also set a school record and staved off Tusculum for the tournament championship. The Pioneers completed play with a team stroke total of 591.

Leading the way for Newberry's first team was Stephen Holmes with a personal best two round score of 142 (71-71); two-under par. Holmes finished just two strokes behind individual tournament champion Chase Carroll of Tusculum.

Carroll shot four-under par for the day on the strength of a first round 68 (68-72 = 140).

Carroll and Holmes were joined on the all-tournament team by Newberry's Daniel Stanley (72-71 = 143; -1) and Matthew Campbell (71-73 = 144; E) along with Southern Wesleyan University's Pieter Martin (73-72 = 145; +1).

Ben Lown finished play tied for fifth place (72-73 = 145; +1) and Ryan Madigan tied for 20th (78-74 = 152; +8).

The Newberry “Gray” squad, or B-team, improved by five strokes from the first to second round en route to a fourth place finish. The Gray team was placed four members in the top-20 with junior Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) completing play in 10th place (72-76 = 148; +4).

Sophomore John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) tied for 11th after a two round total of 149 (72-77; +5). Junior Sean Collard (Guateng, South Africa) and freshman Drew Falvey (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) each shot a 151 and tied for 17th place.

Senior Billy Burrows rounded out the Gray squad with a 36-hole score of 158. Burrows tied for 38th.
Newberry men's golf is next in action September 22-23 in Orlando, Fla. at the Orange County National Golf Course to participate in The Coker College Invitational.
