CLINTON, S.C. - At the State Amateur Championship at the Musgrove Mill Country Club in Clinton, S.C. this weekend, Newberry College men's golf will be well represented. Two current Newberry golfers and one incoming freshman have qualified for the State Amateur as announced by the South Carolina Golf Association.
Rising sophomore Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) qualified with a stroke total of 73 at the Windemere Country Club in Columbia, S.C. Holmes had three top-25 finishes during the 2007-08 season including a fourth place finish at The University of North Alabama Classic in October of last year.
Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) will also be a sophomore this upcoming academic year qualified at the Cobbs Glen Golf Club in Spartanburg, S.C. after a round of 74. Stanley had seven top-10 finishes during the 2007-08 year and was a key piece in leading Newberry to the NCAA National Tournament.
Drew Falvey (Murrells Inlet, S.C.) enrolls at Newberry College as a freshman for the upcoming year and has also made the cut for the State Amateur Championship. Falvey shot a 73 at The Links of Stono Ferry in Charleston, S.C.
“I am very happy that these three players have successfully qualified for the South Carolina Men's Amateur,” said head coach Brian McCants, “I am excited that Drew will get a chance to compete against great competition just before coming to school. Stephen and Daniel have worked very hard this summer; the Men's Amateur will give them an opportunity to compete at a high level before our college season begins next month.”
Play at the Musgrove Mill Country Club will begin on Thursday, August 7 and ends on Sunday, August 10.
