Friday, August 24, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College volleyball team opened the season with sweeps of Paine College and Mount Olive College at the Jaguar Classic on Friday. This is the Lady Indians' first 2-0 start since 2004. Head coach Matt Sonnichsen also picked up his first victories as head coach at Newberry.

Newberry 3, Paine 0 (30-10, 30-10, 30-7)
Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) led the team with 10 kills as the Lady Indians throttled Paine College for their season-opening win.

The Lady Indians controlled the match throughout and picked apart a porous Paine defense. Newberry had a .333 hitting percentage, with only 10 errors and no blocks against.

Newberry also recorded 21 service aces in the match, led by five from senior Christy Stegall (Fort Mill, S.C.). Coleman had four aces, while junior Priscila Sales (Belo Horzonte, Brazil) had three.

Five Lady Indians recorded double-digit dig totals, with Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Stegall each earning 15 digs to lead the team. The Texan duo of Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) and Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) dug out 14 balls each. Niki Hroblak (Lake Wylie, S.C.) had 10 digs.

Newberry 3, Mount Olive 0 (30-9, 30-21, 30-19)
The Lady Indians kept the momentum from their opening match rolling, as they were able to limit Mount Olive to nine points in the opening game. Unforced Lady Trojan errors helped Newberry out, as the Lady Indians went though the first game with no attack errors.

Preseason second team all-South Atlantic Conference selection Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the team with 11 kills in the match, and shared the team lead in service aces with Kilee Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.). The sophomore tandem each recorded three aces.

The team earned a .387 hitting percentage in the match, with only five errors. Coleman, Maia and Fernanda Frey (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each had two solo blocks, with Coleman and Frey teaming up for three block assists apiece.

For the second match in a row, five Lady Indians tallied double-digit digs. Stegall's 28 digs led the way, while Maia (15), Andrade (14), Frey (11) and Lichtie (10) helped keep the ball alive for Newberry.
