HOUSTON, Texas - The Newberry College men's golf team dropped back to 18th place following the second round of the 2008 NCAA National Tournament at the par-70, 7,158-yard Memorial Park Golf Course. The Indians shot a 14-over par 286 for a two-day total of 586 (+20).

Freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) shot an even-par 70 for the Indians' low round of the day. His two-round total of 73-70=143 (+3) is also Newberry's low at the halfway point of the tournament. Lown has shot eight rounds of 70 or lower this season and has 10 sub-par rounds for the year. Lown is tied for 33rd individually.

Freshman John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) rebounded from Wednesday's round of 6-over to shoot a 3-over par 73 in Thursday's round - the second lowest round by a Newberrian. Meetze ended his round on a high note with a birdie on the 18th hole. Meetze's two-day total of 79-73=152 (+12) places him in a tie for 97th place.

Sophomore Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) matched Wednesday's round on Thursday, shooting a 4-over par 74. Burnside's 74-74=148 (+8) puts him in a tie for 79th place.

Freshmen Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) stumbled after solid rounds Tuesday, with Stanley carding an 8-over par 78 and Holmes coming into the clubhouse with a 7-over par 77. Stanley's two-round 68-78=146 (+6) places him in a tie for 59th place, while Holmes' 71-77=148 (+8) ties him with Burnside and six others at 79th place.

The Scarlet and Gray will begin Friday's third round at approximately 8 a.m. local, which is 9 a.m. in Newberry. Newberry golfers will be in groups with golfers from Indiana (Pa.) University and Bryant University. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
