HOUSTON, Texas - The Newberry College men's golf team is tied for 11th place at the 2008 NCAA National Tournament at the par-70, 7,158 yard Memorial Park Golf Course. The Indians fired a 6-over par 286, which ties the team with Washburn University entering Thursday's second round.
Freshman Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) led Newberry with a 2-under par 68, including a birdie on his final hole of the day. The round of 68 places Stanley in a five-way tie for sixth place. The round of 68 is also tied for his career low round at Newberry and is his 10th sub-par round of the season.
Freshman Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) fired a 1-over par 71, tying his career best. The 71 puts him in a tie for 28th place individually. Freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) shot a 3-over par 73 to tie him for 57th.
Sophomore Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) was one stroke behind Lown with a 4-over par 74, while freshman John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) rounded out the Newberry participants with a 9-over par 79.
Despite being tied for 11th place, the Indians will have plenty of opportunities to get back into the title hunt Thursday. The gap between third and 11th place after the opening round is only six strokes. Clayton State University leads the tournament after shooting a 7-under par 273. Florida Southern's Jude Estaquio leads all individuals with a 7-under par 63.
The Indians begin Thursday's second round in the second wave of tee times at 7:47 a.m. local (8:47 a.m. in Newberry). Burnside will tee off first, followed by Holmes, Meetze, Stanley and Lown. Live statistics will be available at www.golfstat.com .
