BELMONT, N.C. – After the second round at the 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional, the Newberry College men’s golf team is in fourth place out of eight teams. The Indians followed a first day 293 with a second round stroke total of 304 at The Point Lake Golf Club in Belmont, N.C.
The leader after two rounds is Georgia College and State University. The Bobcats have a two day score of 580 and hold a four stroke lead over the University of South Carolina-Aiken.
Newberry needs win the Southeast Regional or have one of the top-three scores in the Super Regional (Southeast and Atlantic Regions) aside from each regional champion to advance to the national tournament in Houston, Texas.
Individually, freshmen Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) and Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) are tied for ninth place after the first two rounds. Stanley had a 78 on day two after shooting a three-under par 69 on Monday.
Lown shot even par in the second round with birdies on two of the last three holes.
Freshman John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) is tied for 22nd after a second round 78. Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.), also a freshman, shot a 79 on day two and is in 32nd. Sophomore Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) is tied for 33rd after a 76 on Tuesday.
Georgia College and State University’s Niclas Johansson and Armstrong Atlantic State University’s Chris Wolfe are tied for the lead; each shooting two-under par for the first two rounds.
Newberry finishes up the regional on Wednesday morning with the first Indian teeing off at 8:50 a.m. The Indians golf team can be followed via live statistics at www.golfstat.com.
