BELMONT, N.C. – After the first round of play Monday at The Point Lake Golf Club in Belmont, N.C., Newberry College men’s golf is in second place in the 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional.
The Indians churned out a round one 293 to fall eight strokes behind leader Georgia College and State University and one stroke ahead of Lander University. Newberry needs win the Southeast Regional or have one of the top-three scores in the Super Regional (Southeast and Atlantic Regions) aside from each regional champion to advance to the national tournament in Houston, Texas.
Individually, freshman Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) had a stellar first round that featured a pair of eagles on his 3rd and 17th holes of the day. Stanley also added two birdies in his round and finished three-under par. The first round 69 tied Stanley for first place in the region with Georgia College and State University’s Juan Bialet.
Fellow freshman John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.), Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.), and Stephen Holmes bolstered Stanley’s effort with solid rounds. Meetze completed the first day with a 73 (+1) and is currently tied for 10th place. Lown shot three-over par for a 75 and a tie for 17th place. Holmes knocked out a 76 on the course and is in a tie for 24th.
Sophomore Brandon Burnside was eight-over par with an 80 and is tied for 40th.
The Indians continue play tomorrow with the first Newberry golfer set to hit the links with an 8:00 a.m. tee time. The Newberry men’s golf team can be followed online with live statistics available at www.golfstat.com.
