Brian McCants named SAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. Ė Newberry Collegeís head coach Brian McCants was named the South Atlantic Conference menís golf Coach of the Year the league office announced by the league office on Tuesday.

McCants is the first Newberry College menís golf coach to win the award. Brian has engineered Newberryís successful 2007-08 season with a team full of freshmen. With seven top five finishes in nine tournaments, the Indians have also had 10 top five individual finishes and 13 top ten placements.

Freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) was also recognized by the conference as the menís golf Freshman of the Year. Lown, currently leading the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, has had a tremendous first year as an Indian.

Lown has had four top three finishes this season including a tournament champion performance at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate on April 4-5. Ben holds the school record for a low 36-holes with a two round 138.

Joining Lown on the all-SAC first team is Allen Tuttle from Catawba, Kent George of Lenoir Rhyne, Chris Wynne and Chase Carroll of Tusculum.

Making an appearance on the second team all-South Atlantic Conference is fellow freshman Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.). Stanley has had three top five finishes this year and is currently tied for fourth place in the SAC tournament.

Newberry completes play at the Lake Hickory Country Club at Catawba Springs today.
