Newberry men's golf in first place at Food Lion SAC tournament

HICKORY, N.C. – The Newberry College men’s golf team is in first place after the first place after the first two rounds were completed at the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament at the Lake Hickory Country Club at Catawba Springs in Hickory, N.C.

Monday’s 36-hole event saw the Indians with a combined stroke total of 589 top second place Carson-Newman College by three strokes at the end of two rounds. Newberry posted a first round 301 before churning out a second round 288.

Individually, Newberry’s Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) is the tournament leader after shooting six-under par for the first two rounds. Lown, a freshman, tied his own school record with a 36-hole low of 138 and leads the tournament by two strokes.

Fellow freshman Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) is tied for fourth place after a 144 through 36. Sophomore Brandon Burnside (North Augusta, S.C.) is in 21st after a 153. John Allen Meetze (Chapin, S.C.) is tied for 24th with a 155 and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) is in 42nd with a 166.

The Indians complete play in the Food Lion SAC tournament with an 18-hole round on Tuesday.
