GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Newberry College men’s golf team finished in second place at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate held at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, N.C. after the second round of play on Sunday.

Primarily a tournament for NCAA Division I golf programs, the Indians rose to new heights with a two round score of 582 on the par 72, 7,102-yard course. After a first day school record 18-hole low stroke total of 286, Newberry’s second round of 296 put the Indians ahead of 13 opponents with Barton College the only other Division II program.

St. John’s University (N.Y.) was the overall tournament champions with a combined score of 572 after two rounds.

A large part of the Indians’ team success was the spectacular play of freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.). Lown shot a 69 on each day to finish the tournament six under par and tied for the individual tournament championship with St. John’s Keegan Bradley.

Lown’s 36-hole stroke total of 138 is a new school record; besting fellow freshman Daniel Stanley’s (Inman, S.C.) record of 140 that was set earlier this year.

Stanley finished tied for 12th with a two-day score of 144 and sophomore Brandon Bursnide’s (North Augusta, S.C.) 148 landed him tied for 29th.

The Indians hope to carry momentum into next week’s South Atlantic Conference tournament in Hickory, N.C. on April 14 and 15.
