Newberry golf wraps up AASU/Southridge Pirate Invitational in fifth place

SAVANNAH, Ga. Ė The Newberry Indian menís golf team completed the AASU/Southridge Pirate Invitational in fifth place after finishing the second round Tuesday morning with a team total of 299.

Newberry was in second place after a day one, shooting a 295 at the Southridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga.

Clayton State University (Ga.) was the tournament champion with a five over par team showing. Clayton State followed up a day one 289 with a second round 292. Georgia College and State University completed play three strokes behind Clayton in second place.

Individually, Newberry freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) finished in 13th place after two-day stroke total of 147. Lown his first day 72 with a 75 on Tuesday.

Fellow freshman Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) placed in a tie for 14th with a two-day score of 148 and Daniel Stalney (Inman, S.C.), also a freshman, tied for 16th with a 149.

The individual tournament champion was Will Wilcox from Clayton State. Wilcox completed the tournament seven under-par.
