Newberry men's golf tied for second in Savannah, Ga.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – After round one of the AASU/Southridge Pirate Invitational, the Newberry College men’s golf team stands in second place following a team stroke total of 295 at the Southridge Golf Club in Savannah, Ga. The Indians are six strokes behind tournament leader Clayton State University’s (Ga.) first round total of 289.

Individually, Newberry has three golfers in the top 20 and two in the top 10 after day one. Freshman Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) churned out a 33 on the front nine on his way to a first day 71 and tie for fourth place.

Fellow freshman Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) completed the first round at even par shooting a 36 on the front and back nine of the par-72, 6,922 yard Savannah course.

Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.), also a freshman, was just two strokes behind Lown and wrapped up play tied for 12th with a 74. Junior Colby Hyduke (Bennettsville, S.C.) is tied for 32nd after a round one 78 and sophomore Brandon Burnside’s (North Augusta, S.C.) 83 has him in 55th.

The individual tournament lead is shared by a pair of Clayton State golfers. Will Wilcox and Jonathan Visconti each shot an opening day 68.

Round two of the AASU/Southridge Pirate Invitational resumes on Tuesday morning.
