Freshmen Ben Lown and Stephen Holmes named to UNA Fall Classic all-tournament team

FLORENCE, Ala. - Newberry College freshman golfers Ben Lown (North Augusta, S.C.) and Stephen Holmes (Chapin, S.C.) were named to the UNA Fall Classic all-tournament team by virtue of low-rounds in the top five. Lown's two-day score of 141 was good enough for second place while Holmes' 144 placed him fourth.

Sharing honors with Lown and Holmes on the all-tournament team were Brett Munson (1st) and Matt Gourgeot (3rd) from North Alabama University, Brandon Bennett (tied 5th) from West Georgia University, and Eliot Blake (tied 5th) from Catawba College.

The Newberry College men's golf team finished in second place at the University of North Alabama Fall Classic held at the Blackberry Trail golf course in Florence, Ala.

After a combined stroke total of 289 in round one, Newberry fell eight strokes behind host and tournament champion University of North Alabama on day two. The Indians finished with a 291 on Tuesday with a combined score of 580, four-over par. Newberry's day one 289 tied the second-best 18-hole low in school history and Tuesday's 291 tied for fourth-best.

Newberry completed play three strokes ahead of conference foe Catawba College. The University of West Georgia and Lindenwood University rounded out the top five.

Individually, three Indians turned in rounds under par over the two days, including Ben Lown's school record-setting 68 on Monday. The freshman followed up on Tuesday with a round of 73, finishing with a three-under par for the tournament and in second place.

Lown's combined total of 141 also broke the school record for a 36-hole low score. The previous record was 143 held by Beau Osborne, Hunter Mengel, and Brian Rush.

Lown was joined by two other freshmen in the top ten with Stephen Holmes finishing fourth and Daniel Stanley (Inman, S.C.) tied for seventh. Holmes boasted a two-day score of 144, including a one-under par performance on Tuesday. Stanley shot two-under par on day two and completed play with a combined score of 146.

The individual tournament winner was Brett Munson of North Alabama. Munson completed his home tournament at seven-under par.
