CHERAW, S.C. - Newberry College men's golfer Colby Hyduke claimed the championship of the 31st annual Pepsi Tournament, an amateur event held at Cheraw State Park on May 18-20.
Hyduke, a rising junior from Bennettsville, S.C., finished atop the field of 214 players after a three-round total of 72-74-74=220 (+4).
In both his second and third rounds, Colby struggled on the front nine, but battled his way back, shooting a two-under-par 34 in the second round and a one-under par 35 in the third.
This was the 31st edition of the The Pepsi Tournament, which attracts the top amateur players from the Palmetto State, primarily from the Pee Dee area of the state. A past winner of the tournament is Vance Heafner, who competed on the PGA Tour.
"I am so happy for Colby to have won this tournament," said Newberry College head men's golf coach Brian McCants. "This event is a big deal where he and I come from, which is evident in the number of competitors in the field.
"Colby was really beginning to play well the last month of our season this past spring, and obviously, he is continuing to play even better since school has let out. From talking with him last week, this victory is only going to motivate him to continue working hard this summer to be ready when school starts in August. The menís golf family congratulates Colby on this great accomplishment," McCants added.
