WHITE LAKE, N.C. – A trio of Newberry College golfers shot two-day totals of 147 as the Indians finished tied for third place at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,925 yard Carolina Sands Golf Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Indians shot a two-round team total of 589 during the two-day, 14-team tournament. Newberry was led by senior Hunter Mengel, who turned in another solid performance with a three-over par 147 to finish tied for 11th place. Joining him were fellow teammates Colby Hyduke and Charles Wagner who matched Mengel with a two-round total of 147.
Newberry’s “B” team shot combined total of 624 to finish in 11th place during the weekend. The squad was led by freshman Brandon Burnside, who shot a nine-over par 153 to finish tied for 36th place.
Lander University won the team title with a 568. The Bearcats’ Billy Belair won medalist honors by shooting a 140.
The Indians will next compete in the South Atlantic Conference Championships beginning on April 15 in Hickory, N.C.
