NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team held its awards ceremony on Thursday, April 27, to celebrate the record-setting season and to give four individual awards.  Hunter Mengel, Brian Rush, Daniel Lee, Michael Edwards, and Billy Burrows received individual honors.

Two awards were voted on by members of the golf team.  Hunter Mengel was named the team MVP, and Michael Edwards received the Most Dedicated award.  "Hunter really carried us this year," said head coach Brian McCants, "and Michael really gets after it as far as desire to improve is concerned.  I'm glad that his teammates noticed how hard he has continued to work."

McCants selected the winners of the Top Newcomer and Most Birdies award.  Brian Rush was named the top newcomer, and "his selection was very easy" according to the coach.  Daniel Lee recorded the highest number of birdies as recorded by Golfstat.com.

Billy Burrows received the Newberry College Billy Douglas award, given to the top freshman at the College.  "Billy has been a tremendous addition this year," said McCants, "and his recognition across all sports is a great accomplishment for him.  He could easily have been named Most Dedicated also, as he's a very hard worker."

McCants closed by saying, "Even though a few members of the team stand out because of individual awards, when it comes to the success the TEAM enjoyed this year, all members of the menís golf team should feel responsible for that.  No one individual was responsible for how far our team got in 2005-06, it was a TEAM effort--a collective effort.
