CONCORD, N.C. - The Newberry College men's golf team, which advanced to the NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional at the Rocky River Golf Club on the strength of a second place finish at the South Atlantic Conference Championships, concluded its season today at the Super Regional's final round.
Pfeiffer, Coker, and Barton from the Atlantic Region will join defending national champion USC Aiken and Columbus State from the Southeast Region at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia, in the finals of the men's golf championship.
A long shot to even make the NCAA tournament field, head coach Brian McCants' golfers showed admirable fighting spirit, personified by junior Brian Rush (Duncan, S.C.). Following the second round, Rush's knee was heavily iced and it appeared unlikely that he would be able to compete on the last day. Not only did he compete, but he matched his team-best two-over-par that he fired on day one. His twelve-over for the tournament was good for a share of 14th place.
"I can't say enough about the guys, although I'd like to have shot better than a 308-315-308, but we've had a record-setting year and I'm proud of that," McCants said. "The season had to end sometime, and although we'd like to have gone to nationals, we can't complain about the year we've had. It's been fun and challenging and rewarding.
"My thought process was that we'd progress to the point that we'd be able to reach regionals next year (2006-07). From that timeline then, we're a year ahead of schedule. Now that we've had a taste of success, I know our guys will work hard to get back here, and go one step farther, next year."
While Newberry finished eighth among Southeast Region teams, it did finish with a lower score than three teams from the Atlantic Region, effectively making the Indians 13th out of 16 teams at the Rocky River Golf Club.
Only two seniors will depart from this year's squad, and all five NCAA tournament participants will return, four of them for their senior seasons.
